Diabetes is India’s fastest growing disease: 72 million cases recorded in 2017, the figure expected to nearly double by 2025

Diabetes – a condition caused by the body’s inability to regulate insulin levels, which can lead to tissue damage and organ failure became the country’s fastest-growing disease burden over 16 years. India currently represents 49 percent of the world’s diabetes burden, with an estimated 72 million cases in 2017, a figure expected to almost double to 134 million by 2025. Currently, one in every four people under 25 has adult-onset diabetes, a condition more usually seen in 40-50 year old, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research’s youth diabetes registry. This presents a serious public health challenge to a country facing a future of high population growth.
