What is Hitting Nearly Quarter of Population of India?

The Global Burden of Disease study estimate of age-standardized Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) death rate of 272 per 1,00,000 the population in India is higher than the global average of 235 per 1,00,000 population. That means a quarter of mortality rate is due to Cardiovascular disease. Premature mortality in terms of years of life lost because of CVD in India increased by 59%, from 23.2 million (1990) to 37 million (2010).

A combination of poverty, ignorance, lack of access to quality care and smoking may be driving heart disease-related deaths in India. The study, which provides the first-of-its-kind nationally representative estimates of cardiovascular mortality in India show that heart ailments caused more than 2.1 million deaths in India in 2015 at all ages.
