The First 28 Days of Life

Though India accounts for the highest burden of under-5 deaths, it has shown a faster decline in under-5 mortality reduction compared with the global fall. Worldwide, the under-5 mortality rate reduced by 49 percent from 90 per 1000 live births in 1990 to 46 per 1000 live births in 2013, while India achieved a reduction of 59 percent in under-5 mortality from 126 in 1990 to 52 in 2012.

However, despite these gains, the burden remains high with India contributing to one-fifth of under-five mortality burden and a quarter of neonatal deaths globally, which means 1.1 million under 5 deaths, of which 630,000 happen during the first four weeks of life.

The word ‘neonatal’ means newborn, or the first 28 days of life. The current neonatal rate in India is 29 per 1000 live births and infant mortality rate in India is 42 per 1000 live births. The last decade has seen a tremendous growth of neonatal intensive care in India.
